Treehouse Diorama

My goal with this project was to develop my game art skills in a short time frame.

I have memories of having a ‘hideout’ treehouse as a child so thought this idea would be perfect. I further based this on a modelled treehouse diorama delicately made out of wood. I used this reference image to create my project. I researched into the theme, ‘teen’s treehouse hideout’ to build up an art bible. This included assets such as pirate flags, rope swings, kites and footballs.

I knew from the get go to consistently ask for feedback as I progressed. This really helped me shape my idea and improved my confidence with the new detailed workflow. Solely basing my project on this reference image has tested my translation skills from 2D to 3D which is vital when following ‘Art Bibles’

Whilst creating my project I had to pay attention to new workflows such as retopologizing between Zbrush and Maya, baking High Poly meshes onto low poly meshes in Substance Painter.

To get a better final outcome I should have prioritised my workflow. I was curious about Blueprints, trigger volumes and particle effects inside UE4. I spent a lot of time researching about these tools and practicing. The UE4 documentation and Content Examples proved useful for this. As I am training as a game artist I should have focused more on the artwork rather than the technical work, however saying this I feel that what I’ve achieved in UE4 really adds to my scene.

Learning both ZBrsuh and Speedtree has been challenging, to say the least. So because of this it is hard to fully utilise them in my project without having the necessary experience. I will continue to improve my knowledge with these software packages as I am aware of how powerful and efficient they are in the Game Art production pipeline.

Software Used: Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine 4
